Chanukolęda (HanukCarol)

Chanukolęda – HanukCarol

written in 2017 for two choirs.

This piece is a combination of motifs from Christmas carols that are popular in Poland and traditional Jewish Hanukkah songs. It was written in 2017 by Zuzanna Koziej based on an idea of Wojciech Pławner, the director of the TSLIL Jewish Choir. The seemingly contradictory concept at the heart of this work derives from the fact that Christmas and Hanukkah are celebrated around the same time. In Decembers past, one could hear songs from both traditions playing in many cities and towns throughout Poland. The intention of the choir director and the composer was to create a musical proof that two different cultures can coexist beautifully and in perfect harmony.
